Background:
BasicFibroblastGrowthFactorisfoundinalmostalltissuesofmesodermalandneuroectodermaloriginandalsointumorsderivedfromthesetissues.Endothelialcellsproducelargeamountsofthisfactor.SomebFGFisassociatedwiththeextracellularmatrixofthesubendothelialcells.ManycellsexpressbFGFonlytransientlyandstoreitinaBIOLOGicallyinactiveform.Themechanismbywhichthefactorisreleasedbythecellsisnotknown.Itisreleasedaftertissueinjuriesandduringinflammatoryprocesses.FGFreceptorsareencodedbyagenefamilyconsistingofatleastfourreceptortyrosinekinasesthattransducesignalsimportantinavarietyofdevelopmentalandphysiologicalprocessesrelatedtocellgrowthanddifferentiation.bFGFstimulatesthegrowthoffibroblasts,myoblasts,osteoblasts,neuronalcells,endothelialcells,keratinocytes,chondrocytes,andmanyothercelltypes.
