Parthenolideisasesquiterpenelactone,aclassofnaturallyoccurringplantterpenoids,andtheactiveprincipleoffeverfew(Chrysanthemumparthenium).Parthenolidehasdemonstratedanti-inflammatory,antisecretoryandspasmolyticactivity.ParthenolidehasbeenshowntoinhibitthereleaseofvariouschemicalmediatorssuchasCox-2,TNF-αandIL-1inLPS-stimulatedmacrophagesandactivationofMAPkinaseandNFκβ.RecentfindingsindicatethatparthenolidebindstoanddirectlyinhibitsIκβkinase.ThecompoundhasalsobeenshowntoblocktheproductionofthromboxaneB2andleukotrieneB4.
