MouseIL-13isproducedprimarilybyactivatedTh2cells.HumanIL-13isexpressedinactivatedT-helpercells(resemblingTh0,Th1,Th2),andT-cellsexpressingCD8.ThealphachainoftheIL1-3receptorhasweakbindingactivityforIL-13.HighaffinityreceptorsareformedwhenthereceptoralphachainsofIL-13andIL-4receptorsarecoexpressed.ThereceptorsforIL-13andIL-4shareacommongammasubunitthatisfoundalsointheIL-2receptor.DifferentIL-13receptorstructureshavebeenshowntoexistonvariouscelltypesandtheIL-13receptormaysharemorethanonecomponentwithIL-4receptor.IL-13down-modulatesmacrophageactivity,reducingtheproductionofpro-inflammatorycytokinesandchemokinesinresponsetoIFN-gammaorbacteriallypopolysaccharides.IL-13enhancestheproductionoftheIL-1receptorantagoNISTIL-1ra.IL-13alsodecreasestheproductionofnitricoxidebyactivatedmacrophages,leADIngtoadecreaseinparasiticidalactivity.IL-13inducesdifferentiationofhumanmonocytes,enhancessurvivaltimeinculture,andalsoinducesdifferentiationandproliferationandIsotypeswitchinginB-cells.
