Background:
HemofiltrateC-Cchemokine(HCC)-1isarecentlydescribedmonocytechemoattractant.CCL14(alsoknownasHCC-1)belongstotheCCchemokinefamily.Itsmaturepropeptideisalow-affinityagoNISTofCCR1thatisconvertedtoahigh-affinityagonistofCCR1andCCR5onproteolyticprocessingbyserineproteases.DeterminationoftheaminoacidsequenceofHCC-1revealedfourcysteineresiduesinpositionscharacteristicoftheC-Cchemokinefamily,andcomparisonwiththesequencesofotherchemokinesrevealedthatHCC-1wasmosthomologoustoMIP-1a.However,severalfunctionalpropertiesofHCC-1wereatypicalofchemokines.Unlikeotherchemokines,HCC-1wasexpressedconstitutivelyinanumberoftissuesandwaspresentathighconcentrationsinnormalhumanplasma.Inaddition,HCC-1wasreportednottobechemotacticforleukocytes.
